| 説明 | A chorten sits beside the stairs leading up to Shanti Stupa. In ancient times, chortens (Tibetan for stupas) were built as relic holders but now are mainly built to honor the living Buddhas or Boddhisattavas. Chortens are shaped to symbolize the five elements of nature: earth, water, fire, air and ether. The rectangular base represents the earth. The next somewhat circular one being water, the conical section symbolizes fire, topped by a crescent representing air, with the oval right at the top, being ether. The five elements of nature are a long since disproved belief, however; the chortens are still built in the same shapes to honor longstanding tradition. The Buddhist Way.
