| 説明 | Curramulka. This central Yorke Peninsula township near Port Vincent was established in 1878 when the area was first opened up for farming as the pastoral leases were resumed by the government. The Hundred of Curramulka was created in 1874 when Anstey and Giles who had a run from Curramulka to Yorketown and Stephen Goldsworthy who had a run from Pine Point to Mount Rat had their leases terminated. Surveying of the Hundred began and land (up to 640 acres) was sold on credit to the first farmers in September 1876. The dense Mallee and Sheoak scrub then had to be felled and cleared (mullenised with rollers). The town of Curramulka was laid out as a government town for the entire hundred with a north, south, east and west terraces etc in 1878. It was sited near a deep waterhole in massive limestone rocks where emus used to drink. Hence the name of the settlement. The town name came from curre (emu) and mulka (deep waterhole). Water for the town was supplied from a well 150 feet deep dug and blasted out by Anstey and Giles on their sheep run in 1865. The well provided a stable level and good quality water for the town as it became the government well and the land around it became the town. A windmill was erected over the well in 1884. It was in the small park opposite the hotel. The town developed quickly as allotments were sold in October 1878. A few structures were built near the well before the town was gazetted. They included a blacksmith shop, a small general store and a wood and iron Wesleyan Methodist Church. This church was used as a school. All of this was unoffical. The first official building started in the town was the hotel in November 1878. The first official general store opened in 1879 as did a Luxmoore’s Wheat Store which was used for public meetings, Baptist church services and social events. By the mid 1880s the town had Methodist and Anglican churches, a hotel, stores, a weatherboard government school room (1880) and an Institute which was erected in 1885. The first bank opened in 1883. They all still remain in the town. As the town sits on solid limestone the original location for a cemetery had to be changed as graves could only be dynamited out of the rock! It was established in the “suburban lands” south of the township. The first iron Wesleyan Methodist Church was built in 1878 but it was removed when the stone Wesleyan Church was erected in 1882. It then became a Sunday school hall when a fine new Methodist Church was built in 1912 but it no longer exists. The Anglican Church was built some time later in 1914. A parishioner donated two blocks of land for the church and it opened in January 1915. But the first Anglicans services began in 1878 and were later held in the school or the institute. Almost all buildings in the town were constructed of local limestone blocks. The Baptists held early services in the Wheat Store in 1881. They soon had their own stone church in 1882. It closed in 1914 and eventually became a private dwelling at 14 High Street opposite the old hospital. The weatherboard school was replaced with a fine stone school room in 1891.The nearest port for the grain farmers of the district was Port Julia. Curramulka buildings. On entering the town from the Minlaton road. •On left is the Curramulka Hotel 1878. It has fine old stone stables in the yard. The northern section in the side street was added in 1906. •Next on left is the old General Store. Built in 1886 for Albert Talbot. •Oppose on right is the Post Office with the ugly front addition which was erected in 1927. The first postal service began in Mr Douglas’s general store in 1880. The stone Post Office and telegraph station opened in 1885. The Morse code service ended in 1931 when the telephone was connected to the Post Office! Until 1925 mail came by steamer from Port Adelaide to Stansbury or Port Vincent. Two buildings behind the Post Office is the 1914 Anglican Church. •Next on left is the former Bank of Adelaide. Built in an austere Depression style in 1935. •Opposite on right is the General Store. Originally built as such in 1880 for Alexander Douglas. The façade was rebuilt in 1937 in Art Deco style. It became a Serv-Wel Store in 1967. •On right next door to the General Store is the former blacksmith’s shop. A wood and iron blacksmith’s was built for Daniel Tucker in 1880. He built stump jump ploughs from 1881. He was a major implement manufacturer and added a stone workshop in 1908. This was the Curramulka Implement Manufactory. Look behind the current façade of Curramulka General Agencies to see the old stone building. •Next door on the right the ugly 1950 building was a motor garage. Before this was erected here the town’s electricity supply and an earlier motor garage was on this site from 1908. Electricity was generated from 1922. •Vacant land on left before the Methodist Church was Luxmoore’s the stone Wheat Store building. It was demolished in 1972.•Methodist Church on left 1912. The vestry behind it was added in 1936.•Institute on left 1885 with 1921 addition. Catholic masses were held here from 1921.•On right the War Memorial and gardens. The memorial was erected in 1922. •On left former Baptist Church 1882 now unrecognisable as a church. •Opposite on right is the grand government hospital built in 1927. The hospital closed in 1967. The first town hospital opened elsewhere in 1912. •On right next door is the doctor’s residence. Built in 1915 for Dr Shanahan. Catholic masses were held here until he left the town in 1921. Turn left at this corner. •On left is the state school. It began in 1878. This stone gothic style SA school was built in 1891. Turn left at the school. Then take third left turn to return to the hotel area. •On the left is another double gable fronted general store. These premises were erected around 1898 as a fruit and vegetable store. Behind the store was the early blacksmithing business of T Twelftree. His son sold groceries as well until the family left Curramulka in 1909. The store closed in 1912.•Directly opposite on the right is a former saddlery. Another crucial 19th century business for a town like Curramulka. W George ran a saddlery here in the 1890s. The saddlery had various owners until it closed during World War Two. The stone house next door was used as a wheelwright business from 1885 to 1902. |
