| 説明 | Dutton. The Hundred of Dutton was declared in 1858 because of its proximity to Truro. It stands just to the west of Mt Rufus, the highest mountain in these parts. Mt Rufus is 547 metres high or 1,796 feet, just 180 metres (589 feet) less than the height of Mt Lofty. The township of Dutton is on the cusp of the rain shadow of the eastern part of the Mt Lofty Ranges. It still has sufficient rainfall for reliable cropping. It was settled as a German farming area with people moving here form the Barossa Valley especially Lights Pass. A small creek flowing down from Mt Rufus provided water for the town in the early years. Dutton was named after Francis Stacker Dutton of Anlaby who was briefly Premier of South Australia in 1863. The town was surveyed in 1866 and settled after that. Before the town was surveyed Lutheran services were held in the barn of J Habel from 1863 until a basic little church was built outside the town at Pine Hut in 1866. St John’s Lutheran church was built in Dutton in 1871 and also used as a school until the Lutheran School was built in 1876. The quaint bell tower was added in 1891 with bells from Germany. Across the road the Lutherans built a manse for their pastor in 1892 which is heritage listed. Following a church disagreement the new Holy Cross Lutheran Church was built in 1900. It closed in 1972. Unlike most of towns in this area it also had a Congregational Church from 1879 until it closed in 1958. The land was donated by a local JP Mr Scott and before the opening of the Congregational Church the English residents of Dutton held their own Congregational services in St John’s Lutheran Church. The timber framed Dutton state school opened in 1880 in a different site and closed in 1903. It had 26 pupils in 1880 and Miss Schumann was in charge. The Lutheran school was closed by act of parliament in 1917 and became a state school rented from the Lutheran Church. Dutton state School finally closed in 1955. Dutton has an old heritage listed blacksmith’s shop and residence (1875), an old general store built in 1869 with a parapet along the roof line and an old Post Office (1873). Dutton is one of the few settlements east of the ranges that still manages to survive without public facilities because it is close to Truro. |
