説明Church of St Faith, Overbury, Worcestershire www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/V5s81b - In 1086 it was held by the monks of Worcester; and a priest held half a hide of land there. In 1148 the manor was confirmed to the prior and convent of Worcester by the bishop and remained with the priory until its dissolution in 1540..The present church built on an older site, dates from the 1040 massive double row of stone columns in the nave , ( the variation in the width probably indicates the existence of a former aisleless building). There was probably an earlier central tower with a small sacrarium to the east of it which was lengthened and widened to form a chancel in 13c,it now consists of a 11c - 12c nave with north & south arcades, both with a clerestory, a 13c two bay chancel , 14c aisles, a late 15c three stage tower between chancel and nave, and a 19c porch. The original 12c south doorway with Norman mouldings and arch, was moved to its present position over the north entrance www.crsbi.ac.uk/site/620/ The nave roof was raised and the aisles widened in 14c enclosing the clerestory windows with the new aisle roofs; The 12c font has carved figures of a priest & bishop www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/4uD1PgThe 13c chancel was altered in 15c with new east window.. Two 13c lancets surviving. Restored 1879-80 by architect Richard Norman Shaw for Robert Martin of the banking family who have owned Overbury Court estate since 1723 This work included repairing the east window, new stonework & lancet window at the west end . barrel roof over the nave, internal alterations to the tower & a new porch. There is a dovecote in the roof access to which is provided by a small door beneath the eaves in the north elevation. There are six bells: the treble, by Robert Hendlet of Gloucester (c. 1450), is inscribed 'Sancte Egidi ora pro nobis'; the second, which is probably late 16c, has an alphabet; the third and fourth are by Roger Purdue and dated 1641, the former is inscribed 'Come when I call to serve God all,' the latter 'Halleliah'; the fifth is by Abraham Rudhall, 1719; the tenor was added in 1903 and bears the following chronogram: 'CaMpana sanCtae f I De I Ceter I s Consonare parata.'Picture with thanks - copyright Philip Pankhurst CCL www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5867513
