| 説明 | Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope have found evidence that some giant stars once possessed giant planets but then swallowed up those planets. This illustration depicts the cosmic cannibalism. The astronomers did not directly observe the gobbled-up planets, because the parent stars had already swallowed them. But they did find significant telltale evidence that the giant planets once existed. The planet-eating stars release excessive amounts of infrared light, spin rapidly, and are polluted with the element lithium. About 4 to 8 percent of the stars in our galaxy display these characteristics, according to the results. The researchers add that perhaps as many as 100 million of the Sun-like stars in our galaxy harbor close-orbiting gas giant planets like Jupiter, or failed stars known as brown dwarfs, that are doomed to be gobbled up by their parent stars. For more information, visit: hubblesite.org/contents/news-releases/1999/news-1999-24.htmlCredit: James Gitlin/STScI AVL |
