| 説明 | After my chance milliseconds spotting of the two geisha (called geiko in Kyoto) on the Pontocho food alley, which also has a geisha training school, and after having recovered from my disappointment of not even having time to react, let alone photograph them, it was time to leave Pontocho, As I left, I spotted another of the local eateries on this traditional food street which have adapted themselves to cater to Western customers- as you can see the establishment is an interesting mix of traditional Japanese (the hanging lanterns) and Wesern (the beer drums). Back to the geisha (called geiko here in Kyoto) girls I'd just got the briefest glimpse of- the painted ladies, it is said that the best bet is to go around 5 or 6 pm and wait. At that time of the evening, maiko and geisha are often on their way to an appointment to meet their clients. Geisha (called Geiko in Kyoto) have worked on Pontocho since the 1500s. What you find today is a beautiful street decorated with lanterns at night that features a variety of restaurants. They range from very, very expensive to quite reasonable- geiko (geisha) spottings are extremely rare. I was damned lucky to spot a pair but it was for mere milliseconds and they appeared suddenly from behind a building in a dark corner and were gone in a flash before you can even say geisha girl, (Kyoto, Japan, Apr/ May 2019) |
