In fact two geisha girls appeared suddenly from a corner and walked away pretty fast towards the exit to the street, probably to meet a client. They were so close that I could have actually reached out and touched them (no, that's not an option of course!) but I was so much taken aback at their sudden appearance and disappearance from around the corner that there was no time at all to even react! Kyoto's Pontocho is a magical street just west of the Kamo River and south of Kiyamachi. Pontocho runs north to south from Shijo Dori to Sanjo Dori. Pontocho is best known as one of the licensed geisha areas in Kyoto, but for the average tourist it is well worth a visit. The area is also home to the Ponto-chō Kaburenjō Theatre at the Sanjō-dōri end of the street. This theatre functions as a practice hall for geiko (geisha in Kyoto are called geiko) and maiko (geisha girl in training) and twice a year since the 1870s Kyoto geiko and maiko perform the Kamogawa Odori — Kamogawa river dancing, a combination of traditional dance, kabuki-like theatre, singing and the playing of traditional instruments — there, offering a rare chance for ordinary people to see performances by real geiko and maiko.(Kyoto, Japan, Apr/ May 2019) |
