Now, anything thoughtful is ignored or vilified. Twitter is at the slime mold stage of evolution. I have become Twitter-Amish. It’s bad for the world and bad for me. Google and Wikipedia, on the other hand, give a sense of what individual humans could not do by themselves.”“The first versions of AIs will be hybrids, with some human components. It will develop goals of its own. Google is not for its founders, or its customers. It’s for Google. It has emergent goals and gets its own personality that wasn’t expected. Facebook also has emergent goals as a combination of people and machines. And it is working against the interest of the humans. It is happening in China. The Chinese government is not just people anymore. It’s AI doing face and pattern recognition. In the latest Hong Kong developments, the algorithms identified the dissidents, and suspended judgement like machines. Humans can inject some humanity and break the rules. China must feel like those painful calls to customer service where they say ‘I’d like to, but the computer won’t let me.”“The solution to global warming will come from China, not the U.S. They can think longer term. But will it be a world we want to live in.”“I wonder if I am just an old-fashioned human. I am halfway from a monkey to something else. I guess I am OK with that as long as it’s a better thing, if it’s compassionate and more than human. It depends on which way we push it.” |
