| 説明 | Walls and moats defend the Alba Carolina Citadel which is dominated by the Romanian Orthodox Coronation Cathedral. On the right is the Roman Catholic St. Michael’s Cathedral.The Coronation Cathedral (Cathedral of the Holy Trinity) was built in 1921-22 CE. Completion was in time for the 15 October 1922 CE coronation of Ferdinand I and his wife Marie as King and Queen of Romania.St. Michael’s Cathedral was built 1247-91 CE on the foundation of an 11th century CE church destroyed during the Mongol invasion of 1241 CE. Additions were made in the 14th and 15th centuries CE. The tower dates from the 17th century. It is the largest and longest (89m/292ft) Catholic cathedral in Romania. Among the tombs inside is that of John Hunyadi, regent of Hungary from 1446 to 1453 CE (died 1456 CE).The fortress at Alba Iulia—the Alba Carolina Citadel—was built from 1715 to 1738 CE on the site of two earlier fortifications (the Roman castrum from 106 CE and the medieval fortress from the 16th-17th centuries CE). The largest citadel in Romania, it was built at the behest of and named after Charles IV (Carol IV in Romanian), the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Hungary from 1711 CE until his death in 1740 CE.Alba Iulia was one of the oldest settlements in Romania, a large military as well as economic center during Roman occupation when it was known as Apulum in the 2nd to 4th centuries CE.
