説明 | A break in Tenby on a Pathfinder Tours excursion on Sunday 14 July 2019. At high tide the rocky promonory justifies its name as St. Catherine's Island, but known also as St. Catherine's Rock. Over the centuries a small number of sheep grazed on the sparse greenery and the only building was a small church. Owned for many years by the Earls of Permbroke, at an apparently unrecorded time it passed to the Corporation of Tenby. In 1866 the Corporation sold the rock / island to the Government for use as a defensive position against possible attacks from Napoleon III. Work started the following year and the fort was completed in around three years, other than the final parts of the guns themselves, which did not get their required shields until 1886. By then the threat from France was gone and, after a period of use for training, the fort was sold and converted into a rather well furnished and decorated private house.Although apparently garrisoned during the First World War, it remained in private hands until compulsory purchase in 1940 for military use. After 1945 it was sold again and largely tenanted until use as a zoo from 1968 ended in 1979 and it was left empty. Since 2017 it has been open to visitors with the support of volunteers, and has been a popular attraction. The fort was Listed Grade II* in 1951. |
