| 説明 | Oncolites in fossiliferous limestone in the Ordovician of Kentucky, USA.This rock is in the famous Cincinnatian Series of the tristate area of Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana. Rocks in the Cincinnatian were deposited in relatively shallow marine facies during the Late Ordovician. The Cincinnatian succession is mostly interbedded limestones and shales. Most of the limestones are event beds (= tempestites), deposited during ancient storms. The fossiliferous limestone seen here has irregularly-rounded oncolites (also known as "algal balls"). Elsewhere in the Cincinnatian Series, such oncolites have been found to consist of Solenopora (= fossil red algae) or Girvanella (= fossil blue-green bacteria).Stratigraphy: Corryville Member, McMillan Formation/Grant Lake Formation, Maysvillian Stage, middle Cincinnatian Series, Upper OrdovicianLocality: Flemingsburg South Outcrop - roadcut along Route 11, next to quarry entrance, south of the town of Flemingsburg, Fleming County, northeastern Kentucky, USA (38° 22’ 50.44” North latitude, 83° 44’ 54.93” West longitude) |
