My photos are FREE to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks. It is the only streetcar built by Newburyport Car Manufacturing—which shut down in 1905—to have been preserved. It was recently restored to its 1895 condition.Operating horse-drawn streetcars, Montreal Street Railway was looking into making the move to electric motive power and sent several of its agents to visit major North American cities and study the issue. Objections to electrifying Montréal’s network waned during the course of 1892. The Royal Electric Company was commissioned to provide the electric current and lines as well as a prototype of Brownell’s “Accelerator” demonstrator. Service was inaugurated in September 1892 with a few streetcars from different builders, including Newburyport Car Manufacturing which provided ten vehicles numbered from 274 to 292. The service quickly became popular, despite apprehensions regarding harsh weather. In 1894, the system was fully electrified and the horses were sold.Originally mounted on an unknown-type rigid truck and equipped with two low-power engines as well as a K controller, these streetcars were quickly modified in 1895; a standard Blackwell truck, more powerful Westinghouse electric motors and a recently developed K-2 controller were installed. Montréal’s first streetcars were partially adapted to winter operation and No. 274 was equipped with enclosed platforms starting in 1898 only. Converted into a salt car in 1912, it remained in service in this configuration until 1947. It was saved in 1950 by the Canadian Railroad Historical Association and became the first vehicle acquired for the collection. All the information used with the pictures was taken from information at the Canadian Railway Museum Site.www.exporail.org/en/collections/our-collection/
