| 説明 | It has been a little more than 150 years since the siege and fall of Ngātapa Pā on 5 January 1869. On this day Crown military forces (consisting of Armed Constabulary units, Te Arawa and Ngāti Porou forces) discovered that Te Kooti and his supporters has escaped from the hilltop fortress, lowering themselves by vines over the steep northern cliffs which were considered (by the Crown forces) to be an impractical escape route. They were pursued by the Crown, and those that were captured were immediately stripped and executed.Ngātapa had been under siege since late 1868, when Te Kooti (who had escaped from exile on the Chatham Islands in July 1868) and his forces attacked Matawhero. This image comes from a 1919 report of the siege in Series 27167 (Papers relating to New Zealand War Medal and Pension claims), which is being digitised by the Digitisation Programme.
