| 説明 | Parallel tasting of the Russian Imperrial Stout (RIS) and the Black Magic Woman (BMW), two imperial stouts from Hornbeer in Kirke Hyllinge, Denmark, at Olympen in Oslo.Hornbeer Russian Imperial Stout is an 8.1% abv imperial stout brewed with peat smoked malt and a little Colombian coffee. The Black Magic Woman is a bit stronger, at 10% abv, and was brewed with both roasted and several types of smoked malts as well as a good dose caramel malts and some hops to balance the big malt profile.Both beers poured black with big brown heads, in particular the BMW had a long lasting massive head. The aroma of the RIS was malty with hints of coffee and smoke, but very light. The BMW was much richer, it too had some roasted malts but the sweet, molasses like character, was more dominating but balanced by the smell of piny hops. Not so much smoke though. Mouthfeel of the RIS was medium heavy and creamy. The BMW had silky smooth, full bodied mouthfeel. Flavors of the two beers were really different, the RIS had a very traditional russian imperial stout feel with a good roasted malt character, plenty of coffee, a light ashy smoked note and hints of sweet malt. Good bitter finish. The BMW, on the other hand, was a beast of an imperial stout; it started out with a molasses / caramel sweetness, dark chocolate and some coffee. I could taste licorice too. The smoke was there but very subdued. Then the hops kicked in to balance the massive malt body. Aftertaste wasn't as long as expected for the BMW, after a few seconds it felt a bit watery.Both are good imperial stouts, the RIS fairly traditional while BMW is a modern beast of the American school with a wonderful aroma and mouthfeel but a tad short to be of world class category. But I'll certainly be drinking more of these excellent beers. |
