Planted in 1983.American Conifer Society: This sparsely branched, narrow, conical-shaped conifer lends itself to traditional Japanese garden styles. It’s cones persist and are prominently displayed because of its open habit. It has short blue-green needles – ‘brevifolia’ means ‘short leaves.’ Most nursery listings indicate this to be a Zone 5 but one ACS member tells us it’s comfortable in Z 4a (MN).Location: Michigan State University, Hidden Lake Gardens, Tipton, MI.
