説明 | The other day when I went for a beach walk during a very low tide I first checked Google Maps to look for where might be an interesting place to go. Looking at the shoreline north of Picnic Point I saw a shipwreck, so I went there. There is a little house near this old wreck and the people who live there were checking out the low tide too. They said hi, and told me that the site used to be a salvage operation. Old ships were hauled here and taken apart for scrap. Now there is one very ruined ship only visible at low tide, and this one, mostly above the high tide line. Apparently the operator of the business died before this last ship was taken apart. It was a long time ago, and the elements are slowly taking the ship apart. The people also pointed out that technically it is a private beach. When I was closer to the ship here I could see the "no trespassing" signs on it. But during the very low tide the water was 200 yards or so out and I had approached from that direction. I also didn't think people could own the shoreline of Puget Sound below the mean low water line, but later I checked into it and apparently the state sold land, until 1970, down to "extreme low water" -- meaning as low as the low tide ever gets. You can see this site, during average tide levels, in the state Department of Ecology's shoreline aerial photos website: apps.ecy.wa.gov/shorephotos/scripts/bigphoto.asp?id=SNO0241 |
