| 説明 | Uniformed men, possibly Royal Engineers, attempt to make a badly damaged bridge traversable. They are tying ropes, which will probably serve as handrails, around the large wooden stays that form part of the frame. The buildings behind them have also suffered the ravages of shellfire. Both armies relied heavily on the building and repairing of bridges, railways and roads throughout the war. Without effective and secure transport links, troops, weapons, supplies and equipment could not be transported across the Front. This photograph is one of a series John Warwick Brooke took in and around the area of the Somme.[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT.
