| 説明 | Boche prisoners drawing rations. The mud in this picture is the immediately striking feature of the scene. Both the prisoners and their guards are having to struggle through shin-deep, sticky, wet mud. The prisoners are also having to manoeuvre with huge, presumably heavy, boxes balanced on their shoulders. John Warwick Brooke is thought to have captured these conditions on camera. The derogatory term for a German, 'Boche, originates from the French slang 'alboche, derived from two words 'allemand (German) and 'caboche (pate, head).[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT. Food at last! Boche prisoners drawing rations.']digital.nls.uk/74548292 |
