説明 | This photograph has been taken looking down into a trench or deep pit, where a five-man crew is standing next to a trench mortar. They are all wearing steel helmets and packs round their necks. Despite the snow, the men are not wearing any extra clothing - no overcoats or gloves. The French village of Gommecourt was held by the Germans throughout the war, until they finally abandoned it in September 1917. During the Somme Offensive of 1916, the British viewed capturing Gommecourt as a major strategic objective. Despite various attempts, however, they never managed to prise it from German hands.[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN ON THE FRONT IN FRANCE.
