| 説明 | A lone soldier risks raising his head above the trench parapet in order to look out into no-man's-land and towards the German front line. This looks to be a very shallow trench, with the soldier stooping down to keep watch rather than stepping up on to the fire-step to see what is happening. The belts of barbed wire should help to protect this trench from an attack by infantrymen. During daylight hours, the main danger to front line soldiers was from enemy snipers. This is why periscopes and elevated mirrors were often used by sentries for observation purposes. The high death rate inflicted by snipers meant that they received little sympathy when captured, and were often subjected to summary justice. This was true of both sides.[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN ON THE FRONT IN FRANCE. A look-out, showing our wire in No Mans Land.']digital.nls.uk/74548020 |
