| 説明 | Four soldiers working in a field. The exploding shell mentioned in the original caption can be seen as a white cloud of smoke in the distance. The men in the field are all wearing steel helmets and are working in their shirtsleeves. The man on the left is using a spade to dig through the thick layers of muddy earth. The ground has been reduced to a mass of churned-up mud for as far as the eye can see. The Battle of Messines Ridge (1917), commanded by General Plumer, was deemed a success for the Allies. However, both sides suffered heavy casualties during the battle. The Germans in particular suffered horrific losses after large tracts of their trenches were blown up by Allied mines. The explosion was so loud it was said it could be heard in London.[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT.
