Nicknamed "Bear," he inherited. from his father a large business empire and the seigneury of Beauharnois, south of Montreal. In 1809, he first married Lady Hannah Altheah Bettesworth, the youngest sister of the second Earl Grey and with her fathered one son, Edward. His activities in England as a shrewd businessman and politician had an influence on decisions regarding Canadian affairs. He supported a proposal for the union of Upper and Lower Canada by introducing the Union Bill of 1822, which excited unrest in Lower Canada. / Ce portrait d'Edward Ellice père (1781-1863) est l'une des trois miniatures de la famille Ellice peintes par Ross. En 1809, Edward Ellice père épousa en premières noces lady Hannah Altheah Bettesworth, soeur cadette du second comte Grey, et eut avec elle un fils, Edward. Surnommé « Bear » (l'ours), Edward Ellice père hérita de son père un grand empire commercial et la seigneurie de Beauharnois, au sud de Montréal. Ses activités en Angleterre comme homme d'affaires et politicien habile influencèrent la politique britannique touchant le Canada. Il appuya une proposition pour l'union du Haut et du Bas-Canada en introduisant l'Union Bill de 1822, qui suscita de l'agitation dans le Bas-Canada. |
