説明You may think my hula hoop is about the culture of the 1960’s, but that’s not the case. I chose this object because of its shape, rather than its function. A circle is a symbol of unity, and in my opinion, an underutilized structure in our culture. Except for perhaps preschool and kindergarten, students sit in rows. At work, we sit at our desks solo, or in meetings around a table, usually rectangular. Seat people in a circle or at a round table and you instantly influence community, (commune + unity). Even if people choose silence over conversation, circles facilitate connection, increase participation and reduce hierarchy. In a circle, individuals can see others" eye to eye"; they listen more fully, retain more, ask more questions and relate more intimately. Scholars write that the circle is the perfect expression of infinity, connection and continuity, as it has no beginning and no end, with no turns or corners in between. This perfect geometric shape symbolizes the center and perfection of the self in its wholeness. " I have seen the magic of a circle in my work: shy people risk sharing, demarcations between leaders and followers blur, and the sense of inclusion and connectedness breeds personal empowerment. In my earlier career as a speech pathologist, I learned that structure influences function. This certainly seems true for the circle. The circular structure has a positie impact on communication, connection and community.-- Eileen N. Sinett
