| 説明 | A bascule bridge (sometimes referred to as a drawbridge) is a moveable bridge with a counterweight that continuously balances a span, or "leaf", throughout its upward swing to provide clearance for boat traffic. It may be single- or double-leafed.The name comes from the French term for balance scale, which employs the same principle. Bascule bridges are the most common type of movable span because they open quickly and require relatively little energy to operate, while providing the possibility for unlimited vertical clearance for marine traffic. This pair of wrought-iron Scherzer rolling lift bascule bridges was installed on Custom House Quay 1911-12. The bridges enable traffic to pass over the channel connecting George's Dock to the River Liffey. They are constructed of riveted wrought-iron with box-like structures crossing carriageways rising from curved sections with corresponding tread plates to carriageway. Each bridge is supported on iron supports flanking carriageway. Curved sections extend eastwards as riveted iron parapets braced at forty-five degree angle to elevated box sections. Counterweights not visible below deck. |
