説明Update: A newspaper article about the accident has been added at the bottom.A Time for Reflection . . .I left Kingman, Arizona with Rose on the back of my bike. Anthony and Lynette were riding in her car behind us. We were riding westbound on Arizona State Route 68, going down the 12.4-mile-long 6% grade from Union Pass to Bullhead City. When we were 3.2 miles down from (west of) the pass, a bike in the eastbound lanes failed to negotiate a curve and went into the median strip and then across our lanes. The bike and the rider were both tumbling and sliding directly toward us.I didn't have time to consciously react. My reflexes took over and applied the brakes and tried to steer around the bike coming toward us. We were going down a steep grade, so it was harder to stop than it normally is. We managed to avoid crashing and quickly came to a stop on the shoulder.(I took this photo after everything was over.) The bike slid where the red line is in the photo. The rider slid where the green line is in the photo. The bike ended up out in the desert far from the road; in the photo you can see someone standing near it. The rider hit the guardrail hard enough to break out one of the 8x8-inch or 10x10-inch posts. After I got the bike stopped I told Rose to call 911 and I ran back to the rider. I was planning on feeling his carotid artery just in case there may be a faint pulse, but I was sure he was dead. No one could have survived a crash like that. When I reached the rider, he was unconscious, but barely breathing. I made a quick survey of the scene and determined he had head injuries, a compound fracture of his left leg, and a crushed right shoulder. I'm sure he had many more broken bones, but none were sticking out obviously. Lynette parked the car and came back to se what she could do to help. A few other people began stopping to help. As he started to regain consciousness it became difficult to keep him still. He didn't respond to my commands, but he responded to Lynette's commands to lay still. We were in one of the few areas where there was no cell phone signal. Eventually an Arizona Highway Patrol officer arrived on the scene and called for paramedics and a medivac helicopter. There wasn't much he could do and I had things under control, so he started finding out who witnessed the accident and began his reports. Eventually the paramedics arrived and packaged up the rider and took him away to the trauma unit at the hospital in Las Vegas. We finished up making the police reports and then we helped the rider's buddy get to Bullhead City. The buddy was a psychological mess after watching his friend crash. When everything was over, Rose didn't want to ride on the bike anymore for the rest of the weekend. Neither did Anthony. Seeing the accident freaked them out a little bit. They both spent the rest of the weekend and the trip home riding with Lynette in her car. This is looking east from the shoulder of the westbound lanes of Arizona State Route 68, at approximately mile 9.2.————————————————————————————————————————Nationwide, motorcycle fatalities dropped 10% in 2009.Source: Motorcycle Safety Foundation————————————————————————————————————————Crash on Highway 68 Kills MotorcyclistBy Daily News staffSunday, April 25, 2010Bullhead City, Arizona — A motorcyclist died Saturday afternoon from injuries suffered in a single-vehicle accident on Arizona State Route 68 east of Bullhead City.According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the operator of the motorcycle was the lone person involved in the accident near Milepost 9 on Highway 68 between Bullhead City and Kingman.
