| 説明 | The man on the builder's plate is Louis Victor Robert Schwartzkopf who lived from 1825 to 1892. In 1852 he founded a foundary and engine factory in Berlin which later became an important locomotive builder. It's nice that they pay tribute to him with this plate which belongs to one of the heaviest and most powerful German express steam engines. Luckily that locomotive is operational these days. It is a class 01.10 from 1940 which wore a streamlined shroud when it was new. After WW II the shroud has been removed and the engines where equipped with new high performance boilers. Some of them (including the sample in the image) were converted to oil burners which gave them some extra ooomph. The 01.10 heavy pacific is a three cylinder engine. When it accelerates a heavy train you feel like being exposed to a brute natural force. It shivers your very bones - simply fantastic. |
