Here you'll find isolated examples of plants and animals which have been preserved by the ruggedness of the country. The Red Sea is the western border of the province. It's a four hour drive west of Tabuk, and provides some of the most beautiful diving in the world. Tabuk is a wishing-bone shaped province that includes part of the the Hisma, Hejaz and Shammar mountain ranges, as well 400km of the Red Sea coastline and the Gulf of Aqaba. Tabuk is also the name of the capital of the province. It's an ancient town dating back 3,500 years. Situated in the north of the Kingdom, on the pilgrimage and trade routes, it was the scene of Prophet Mohammad’s (pbuh) most dangerous battle 9H (630). It’s now home to the King Abdul Aziz Military City, King Faisal Air Base, and home of the Royal Saudi Land Forces, as well as military academies and infra-structure to support the personnel. The Hisma mountain range near the Gulf of Aqaba provides a superb landscape for camping and hiking. On Jebel Lawz and in Al Bad in Wadi Ifal there are half a dozen well-preserved and unadorned Nabataean tombs cut into the hillside. Weather is moderate and humid in summer, but pleasant most of the year. There are nicely managed sandy beaches and some major fishing towns such as Duba, where arrangements can be made for boat hire and fishing expeditions. The city of Tayma is 264 km to the southeast of Tabuk on the western edge of the Great Nafud Desert. It is an old oasis which contains a variety of archaeological sites dating from the prehistoric age to the Islamic period. Surrounded by agricultural fields with numerous water wells and gardens, the city has developed around its great well, called Haddaj. Attractions include the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography and Cemeteries. |
