| 説明 | Edit: oh crap, this guy actually got a press release. somehow I missed it.A nice spiral-y planetary nebula... in the Large Magellanic Cloud... imaged by Hubble's STIS. This data was collected as part of a survey to study planetary nebulae in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, the two biggest satellites of the Milky Way. I don't think I've ever seen a colour image constructed out of solely STIS data and I think this image makes it pretty clear why (check out those stars, NICMOS has some competition). It takes a fair amount of time for the (not very spectacular) result you end up with. The coolest thing about this is that it's a planetary nebula in another galaxy.I represented broadband data here in the blue channel and significantly desaturated the stars, which I'm not sure was the best decision. OIII is represented in green and Ha is represented in red. The STIS narrow(medium?)band channels make for some interesting exposures and I'm not exactly sure how it works. The object appears multiple times throughout the frame and is referred to as "entangled." It seems like the Ha channel also includes NII, but the two were mashed together in the exposure. This image has been enlarged to 150% its original size.Red: STIS G750MGreen: STIS G430MBlue: STIS MIRVIS (clear)^ G750M = 658nm and G430M = 500nm according to the press release. anyone know what's up with the funky numbers? |
