| 説明 | Construction of the jail at the Tule Lake Segregation Center began in 1944 by incarcerates and held men suspected of committing carious crimes, though none were ever legally tried. The building later held those who had renounced their American citizenship. Inscriptions scrawled on the walls remain a testament to those men held in this "jail within a jail" that awaited release or transportation to Department of Justice camps and later Japan.Though the bars inside were taken out, the jail remained one of the few buildings not torn down or removed after the segregation center closed in March 1946. The fence and roof that you see now were installed by the California Department of Transportation in 2004 to help preserve this unique structure. The local Osborne fmaily donated the original ail bars to the NPS in 2012.Tule Lake Segregation Center @ Newell, California |
