| 説明 | I returned to Digbeth to get the Digbeth Institute as I noticed that the scaffolding had come down. The scaffolding also came down on Devonshire House.I got off my bus, and took these shots of The White Swan on Bradford Street, on the corner with Birchall Street.Haven't seen much of the main Digbeth High Street since my bus route switched to going up Bradford Street.I am thinking of one day properly doing Bradford Street, but not yet.Note: I got two pubs called The White Swan. This one and one in Ladywood. Although I prefer this one to the one on Grosvenor Street West (near Broad Street and Sherborne Wharf).It is a Grade II listed building.Public house. 1899-1900 by James and Lister Lea for Ansells Brewery.Red brick and terracotta (terracotta probably from Hathern Station.Brick and Terracotta Company of Loughborough). Slate roof with copedgables, terracotta dentilled eaves and pierced ridge tiles. Brick axialand gable end stacks.Plan: Situated on corner site. Public bar with entrance on BradfordStreet and corner; passage to smoke-room at back on left and outdoorand passage to stairs on right in Birchall Street. Jacobean or Flemishstyle.Exterior: 2 storeys and attic. 4-bay front to Bradford Street. Bays2 and 4 Dutch gabled; canted corner with canted terracotta oriel overdoorway and 3-bay front to right on Birchall Street, the left bayDutch gabled, the right plainer lower 2-storey range. Terracottaground floor with panelled plinth, the large bar windows and doorwayshave cable-moulded arrises, the central doorway on Bradford Street hassegmental pediment on consoles in the entablature above. Bar windowshave leaded panes and stained glass. Recessed wooden canted bays onfirst floor with pulvinated friezes and ogee lead canopies and simple-light windows between with cornices. The attic windows have cornicesand aprons and are in Dutch gables with flanking finials and pendantsand aedicules at apex with semi-circular pediments; pedimented dormerbetween gables on Bradford Street front.Interior: Good Minton tiled interior with friezes in public bar,passages, stairs and outdoor. Public bar also has tiled ceiling andpanelled front to bar counter and pilastered bar back with archedmirrors and balustrade and clock above. Partition in public bar hasbeen removed; but entrance lobby survives; ceiling lined in Lincrustapaper. Passages have engraved glass in doors and- particularly goodwall tiling which also lines stair well; the stairs have mouldedbalustrade and newels. Smoke-room has tiled frieze and small ironchimney piece and grate.The White Swan, Bradford Street - Heritage GatewayThink the pub is a Marston's pub now.Marston's was established in 1834. |
