説明 | The Buzby outfit lived in our loft for years. It must literally be the scruffiest corporate mascot ever. Note also custom-made Buzby sportswear, presumably paid for by BT, dad's employer at the time. And I'm preserving the photographer's bizarre cropping of this photo - presumably meant to include the young woman in the red jumper - for reasons of historical veracity.I learn from this excellent Londonist post that the Sunday Times National Fun Run began in 1978, so this photo could actually be from as early as that. Bryan has a great archive of programmes from the event (see also, presumably from an earlier event, where Buzby's in slightly better nick). My dad and his colleagues were part of a team that sold telephones to small businesses. It can't have been a very hard sell because, at the time, before privatisation, you couldn't buy them from anyone else. He was fantastically proud of the fact that he once sold one to Eric Morecambe who lived not far from us in those days.Dad had been a trade unionist all his working life and, while in this job, he was an elected official of the Telephone Contract Officers Association (TCOA), the union that represented the salesmen and women. It was a national role but he wasn't paid and he got time off only for the annual conference. It consumed a huge part of his life - I'd fall asleep almost every night to the sound of his furious, two-finger typing in the next room. He was treasurer so they gave him a huge, old mechanical adding machine, which clattered away, alongside the typewriter, well into the calculator era.The TCOA, so tiny and so obscure that you'll honestly struggle to verify its existence, never had more than about 1,000 members and ultimately merged with what became the Communications Workers Union. It's on this Wikipedia page listing TUC affiliates. One day I'll have to write its own entry. |
