| 説明 | A map of the Glenville shootout, a four hour gun battle on Jly 23, 1968, between the Cleveland Division of Police and African American militants on and around Lakeview Road in the Glenville neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.A timeline of the 1968 Glenville Shootout and the subsequent riots.A drug-addicted FBI informant said on July 21, 1968, that local Cleveland man Ahmed Evans and his Black Nationalists of New Libya group were buying guns and ammo and planning to assassinate a number of local leaders. The FBI told the Cleveland Police, who dismissed the tip as unreliable. Worried that Evans might learn of the tip and react aggressively, the Cleveland police plan to surveil his home. Black city leaders ask for "roving surveillance" (cars moving through the neighborhood), rather than a stationary surveillance (which is more noticeable). Black city leaders decide to talk to Evans, to ensure that he wass calm and not planning anything stupid....Noon - Report of an abandoned vehicle on Beulah Avenue between E. 123rd Street and Lakeview Avenue.1:25 PM - Abandoned vehicle on Beulah ticketed.6:00 PM - Cleveland City Councilman George Forbes and City Youth Director Walter Beach (the former NFL player) arrive at the Afro Culture Shop and Bookstore at 11105 Superior seeking Ahmed Evans. He is not there.7:50 PM - Forbes and Beach arrive at 12312 Auburndale Avenue, the apartment house where Evans lives, and talk to Evans.8:05 PM - Forbes and Beach leave Evans' apartment house. An armed guard emerges from the apartment house and stands by the front door.8:10 PM (approx.) - Forbes calls Mayor Carl Stokes to demand that that the stationary surveillance be called off. A busy Stokes asks him to call back in 15 minutes.8:19 PM (approx.) - Forbes arrives at the home of Harllel Jones, a black nationalist and friend of Evans. The armed guard at the apartment house aims his rifle at the unmarked police surveillance car ("Unmarked Car #1") at Auburndale and E. 124th Street.8:20 PM - Radioing for orders, the unmarked police surveillance cars are told to leave the area. Unmarked Car #1 flees north on E. 124th street allegedly followed by a station wagon; it reports shots fired at it. Unmarked Car #2 (Moulton Avenue) flees south on Lakeview; it reports several shots fired at it.8:21 PM (disputed by tow truck personnel) - A tow truck arrives on Beulah Avenue. Tow truck worker William McMillan argues with African American man briefly.8:24 PM - A marked police car with uniformed officers inside at Moulton and E. 123rd Street reports shots fired in the area. Unmarked Car #2 returns north on E. 120th to assist.8:25 PM (disputed by local residents) - Tow truck arrives on Beulah Avenue.8:25 PM - Ahmed Evans leaves his home to walk to Lakeview Tavern. A man standing at Beulah Avenue and Lakeview Road shoots McMillan in the back with shotgun. Ahmed Evans runs north to Beulah Avenue. A man in some bushes next to the tow truck rises and shoots McMillan in the side. McMillan runs north on E. 123rd and is shot again in the right side. Ahmed Evans sees McMillan run north on E. 123rd.8:26 PM (approx.) - Unmarked Car #2 arrives on Beulah Avenue some distance from the tow truck. The plainclothes officers see McMillan running north on E. 123rd, and three or four gunmen on north sidewalk of Beulah Road at Lakeview. The officers say two snipers hiding by the tow truck fired on their car; the officers return fire, and flee north on E. 123rd. Alleged gunman Leroy Williams is shot, and lies dying on the south sidewalk at Beulah and Lakeview. Ahmed Evans fires on the fleeing police with his carbine, then runs around the corner and hides inside the house at 1384 Lakeview Road.8:28 PM - The tow truck driver (still inside his vehicle) radios police for help.8:30 PM - CPD headquarters issues a broadcast for all available cars to respond to shooting.8:30 PM - CPD officers Gibbons and Wolff arrive at the intersection of Lakeview and Auburndale. As they exit their vehicle, a rifle bullet hits the engine. The car explodes, killing Wolff and injuring Gibbons.8:30 PM - CPD officers Levy and Moran pull up behind Gibbons and Wolff. They run south to 1439 Lakeview, behind it, and then north up and alley and then a driveway. Moran is shot, dives behind a parked civilian car, and is shot again. Levy finds safety under the parked civilian car.8:30 PM - CPD officers McMannamon and Szukalski arrive in front of the tow truck on Beulah Road. They see two groups of gunmen at Beulah and Lakeview. One or more gunmen on the south sidewalk of Beulah fire on them; Szukalski is seriously wounded, McMannamon lightly wounded.8:32 PM (approx.) - The gunmen on Beulah run east down a narrow alley, then south down a broad alley.8:33 PM (disputed by homeowner) - Police say some gunmen enter the home at 1395 Lakeview.8:34 PM (disputed by police) - Homeowners say police enter 1391 Lakeview and 1395 Lakeview seeking the gunmen.8:34 PM (disputed by police) - Homeowners say the gunmen enter 1395 Lakeview after the police are already there.8:35 PM - CPD officer Louis Galonka is killed while moving between 1391 and 1395 Lakeview.8:40 PM - Alleged gunman Sidney Taylor is killed in the alley behind 1391 Lakeview.8:45 PM - Alleged gunman Bernard Donald is killed in the bushes behind 1395 Lakeview.8:45 PM - CPD officer LeRoy Jones is killed on Auburndale Avenue. CPD officer Joseph wounded on Lakeview exiting his vehicle. Local resident Henry Orange is wounded. CPD officer Hart is wounded on Lakeview, and shot several more times as he lays in the street.8:55 PM - CPD officer Szalkiewicz is wounded trying to push a police car off Lakeview.9:00 PM - CPD officer Santa Maria is wounded trying to retrieve Jones; civilian James Chapman is killed while aiding Santa Maria to get to Jones.9:15 PM - Police burst into the Lakeview Tavern, shoot patron John Pegues in the leg, and pistol-whip all the men. CPD officer Sherbinski rushes to the second floor and is wounded by snipers on the street below.9:26 PM - Leroy Mansfield, pulled from the street by friends, is declared dead at Huron Road Hospital.9:30 PM - CPD officers Smith and Rowell wounded helping Levy.9:45 PM - Shooting ends at Auburndale and Lakeview.Between 9:45 PM and midnight - Police allegedly shoot a man inside 1395 Lakeview.11:11 PM - A police dispatcher reports Ahmed Jones is ready to surrender at 1384 Lakeview. No one responds.Midnight - Police storm 1395 Lakeview, and claim to see a body lying on the floor. 1391 and 1395 Lakeview burn to the ground under mysterious circumstances.Between midnight and 1 AM - Harllel Jones retrieves the bodies of Sidney Taylor and Bernard Donald. He discovered a wounded Lathan Donald between 1391 and 1395 Lakeview, and pulls him to safety as well.12:24 AM - Police finally arrest Ahmed Evans at 1384 Lakeview.Thus ends the Shootout. |
