説明This is Caffe Nero, the former Birmingham Midshires bank building on Temple Row West.Cathedral Place are letting new offices in the building.Dates from 1900 - 02 by Mansell & Mansell. A fine office block in brick and cream terracotta, the steel structure firmly expressed in the brick and terracotta grid of the facade. Built for the Ocean Assurance Corporation with the initials and bands of roses and thistles, and waves and fishes, on the corner oriel. Finely moulded entrance. Shallow canted end bay. Delightful fantasy at the top: ogee windows, parapet with heart-shaped piercings, two-stage corner turret, end gables with brick and terracotta diapering. Ground floor windows lowered in 1983.Above info from Pevsner Architectural Guides: Birmingham by Andy Foster. It is a Grade II* listed building. At 44 Waterloo Street.C1900. Brick and terracotta. In a Perpendicular Gothic style. Five storeys; 3 bays in the rhythm 1:2 plus the polygonal corner turret with entrance below and another 4 bays on the return in Temple Row West. Ground floor with a subsidiary entrance up steps and within a cusped and sub-cusped arch with finial and 2 cusped and sub-cusped arched windows. The principal entrance up steps and flanked by 2 orders of colonnettes and dainty decoration in the stilted arches; left and right polygonal shafts carrying beasts bearing shields inscribed O and A. First, second and third floors each with 3 cross windows with cusped lights and set between horizontal moulded bands variously treated in their details. Fourth floor with three 2 light ogee headed windows. Thin banded polygonal buttresses rise either side of bay 1 almost to parapet height; even thinner moulded shafts rise likewise left, right and between the other bays. The polygonal corner turret is fenestrated similarly - as is the return on Temple Row West. All except ground and first floor windows with original leaded lights. Parapet with complex gable-cum-chimney, parapet and corner polygonal turret with pointed slate roof.44 Waterloo Street - Heritage GatewayA Cathedral Place banner advertising new office space at 44 Waterloo Street.
