| 説明 | Oakley was originally Church Oakley and the 12th century church which is dedicated to St Leonard has a tower that was built by Archbishop Warham in the 16th century. Repairs were carried out and it was rebuilt in 1869 and in the 19th century a Harvest home celebration was held for all that worked on the Malshanger Estate, and all were given a buttonhole comprising oak, barley, wheat and rye and tied with a red ribbon.A service of thanksgiving was held in the church and this was finished off with a huge meal in the Refectory Barn.In the Domesday Survey it was shown as having seven villagers, and seven smallholders with three ploughs, four slaves and a church but by 1940 this had risen to around 350 inhabitants and this very quickly grew in the next 20 years when new housing was added to the village. |
