| 説明 | Whilst returning from Crewe Open Day by train, I saw Berkhamsted Castle properly for the first time and thought we should explore it. Considering it is free to visit and according to the signage "largely robbed of it's stone by the townsfolk" there is an impressive amount left! It was a Motte & Bailey castle built in 1170 by William the Conqueror's half-brother, Robert of Mortain. Fortified again by The Black Prince, it was later converted to a Palace by Thomas Beckett. Threatened with destruction in 1833 by the construction of the London & Birmingham Railway, it became the first building in the UK to receive protection from Parliament. |
