My photos are FREE to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks.Drum dancing was traditionally practiced by men, but now women also participate. These ceremonial dances are performed by one dancer or by a group in a circle or a line. Dancers perform steps and gestures to the beat of the drum.Elders will often share stories through song while someone is drum dancing. These songs are imbued with knowledge of family histories, about hardships the Inuit have endured, their knowledge of the land and the spirituality of their people. Children are shown how to drum from a young age, and eventually they are taught the significance of each song and dance. The drum is traditionally made of caribou skin stretched over driftwood collected on the shoreline. Today, other materials are often used.Drum dancing today might incorporate other instruments, but the sound of the drum remains unmistakable. This mosaiculture artwork was developed in collaboration with the Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association. |
