説明 | My favorite family picture of all time. Shot at Grandma and Aunt Ethel's house, called "Bayberry," in Brick Township in Ocean County, New Jersey, on the edge of the Pine Barrens. Now it's the site of Boulevard Square shopping center. (see the map) Top row: Ethel F. Searls (Grandma, née Englert), Grace Apgar (née Searls), Florence Dwyer (née Englert), Catherine Burns (née Dwyer), Sue Apgar (later Sefcik), Mary Ellen Wigglesworth, Archie Apgar. Middle row: Eleanor Searls (née Oman), Ethel M. Searls, Allen Searls, George Apgar. Front row: Janet Searls, Kevin Burns, David Searls (me, with the beer), Donald Burns, Martin Burns and a cat (who was scratching him at the time). Grandma (Ethel F) and Florence are two of the four Englert Sisters featured in the Englert, Dwyer and Searls archival photoset. Ethel M, Grace and Allen are Ethel F's kids. Allen was my father. Catherine was Florence's daughter and Martin's and Kevin's mom. Grace is George and Sue's mom. (Also Ron's. He was shy about being in pictures at the time.) Uncle Jack Dwyer, Florence's husband, and grandpa to the Burns boys, was behind the camera. I wrote about the good times we had in a blog post on the day Mom died, in August 2003. All from my generation are alive. Of our parents, Grace is still with us — and helping out with the details on many of these pictures. She'll be 100 next June. (Updated December 29, 2011.) (January 2014 update: Grace died last month at age 101, strong and fun to the last.)All four Englert sisters lived long lives. Grandma holds the record at almost 108. Actually, all of the adult women in this photo (other than Ethel, who died tragically young, relatively speaking, in her 60s) lived into their 80s and 90s. The men, smokers all, proved less durable. |
