説明 | Stained glass window inside the Lazarus family mausoleum at Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio, in the United States.Simon Lazarus (1807–1877) was born in Württemberg, Germany, and trained as a rabbi. He emgirated to Columbus in 1850, and established a clothing store. He named it "F&R Lazarus" after his two sons, Fred and Ralph, born in the United States. When not marketing clothing, Simon Lazarus was the first rabbi of central Ohio's oldest Reform synagogue, Temple Israel.Fred Lazarus Sr. (May 5, 1850-March 23, 1917), Simon's eldest son, expanded the business radically, introducing innovations like men's read-made clothing, adding a separate men's-clothing section on the second floor, and even putting in a "stag" elevator in the store. The mausoleum was built for Fred Sr.Simon Lazarus II (August 19, 1882-December 21, 1947) was Fred Sr.'s eldest on. He ran F.&R. Lazarus with his brother. Fred Lazarus Jr. (October 29, 1884 – May 27, 1973) was Fred Sr.'s second son. Together, they created Federated Department Stores by merging F.&R. Lazarus with Abraham & Straus of Brooklyn, Filene's, and Bloomingdale's. They pioneered "one low price" (no bargaining), and were the first to equip a department store with escalators and air conditioning. Fred later convinced President Franklin D. Roosevelt to move Thanksgiving a week earlier in order to make the Christmas shopping season longer. |
