| 説明 | Mundoora .Mundoora was established in 1874 being one of the first settlements on the plains above Yorke Peninsula. It comes from an aboriginal word meaning “deep water.” This area was even more favoured than Port Broughton at that time as it was beyond the Mallee scrub area of the plains and so it was easier to clear land for wheat farming. By 1876 a general store had opened in Mundoora, a post office opened the following year and a blacksmith too. The blacksmith was Mr Carman who also served as the town’s undertaker and carpenter. The Institute or Hall had its centenary in 1974, although the original building did not open until 1904 and the facade is a memorial for World War One built in 1924! Certainly the arrival of the horse railway in 1876 boosted the prospects for the town’s growth and a school opened in 1879, finally closing in 1943. The town soon had a hotel and a small Methodist Church opened in 1924. |
