ShookRemark: This church, constructed in 1926, is located at the corner of Washington Street and 6th Avenue.------The following news item appeared in the September 16, 1926, issue of The Chesterton Tribune:COMMUNITY HOUSE TO BE DEDICATED AT GARYThe largest religious center in the Calumet region, the First Methodist Episcopal Church and Community House of Gary, will be opened and dedicated at Gary the week of Oct. 3 to 10 in a series of services at which Bishop Thomas Nicholson, of Detroit, Prof. Edwin P. Steiner of Grinnell College, Bishop Fred Fisher of India, Bishop Frederick L. Leete of Indianapolis and other notables will be speakers, it was announced by Rev. William Grant Seaman pastor of the congregation, which is completing the big project.Forming a beautiful Gothic group of buildings constructed of Bedford stone, the project includes a church building with an auditorium seating 900, the exterior being featured by a tower 100 feet high; a community center composed of a theatre-type auditorium and stage for address, plays and mass meetings, a gymnasium, parlors, studies and classrooms; and a business block with cafeteria and rooms to be rented to commercial interests. The total cost of the building was $792,325 [$14.5 million in 2026 dollars]. Lowe, Granger and Bollenbacher, Chicago, were the architects and the H. G. Christman company of South Bend, the builders. The religious center is but half a block from the business center of the city and so located "that Christ may dwell a living presence at the city's heart," its slogan states.The church will be opened Sunday, October 3, in services at which the speaker will be Rec. D. D. Forsythe, corresponding secretary of the Board of Home Missions, Methodist Episcopal Church, Philadelphia. Bishop Nicholson will speak at services Monday evening while Prof. Steiner will be speaker Tuesday evening. Bishop Fisher of India will deliver an address on Friday night.Formal dedication services will be held Sunday, Bishop Leete speaking at the morning service and District Superintendent B. D.
