説明PUBLIC SCHOOL PORTER IND.Date: 1912Source Type: PostcardPublisher, Printer, Photographer: M. L. Photo Company (#7)Postmark: May 7, 1912, Porter, IndianaCollection: Steven R. ShookRemark: Originally referred to as Porter School, this school's name was later changed to Hageman School. The structure on the left was built in 1895 to replace the smaller building to the right, which was constructed in 1883.The larger school seen here was designed by E. Clarke Johnson, an architect from Hobart, Lake County, Indiana, as a six room school that could be expanded later to add two more rooms. Johnson estimated the building cost to be $9,000. The following three bids were submitted to Westchester Township Trustee Frederick Burstrom on July 6, 1895, to construct the school: Channing and Harbert, $9,685; Nathan Demass, $9,250; and Ameling and Emerson, $9,693. Demass was awarded the contract due to his lowest bid.The larger building was demolished in 1973. These school buildings stood where the Hageman Public Library is now located at 100 Francis Street. When the smaller school was vacated as a public school, it was then used by locals of Swedish nativity or descent for many years and referred to as the Swedish School.---------The smaller of the two schools shown in this postcard is mentioned in the March 24, 1910, issue of The Chesterton Tribune:Porter DepartmentEmil Busse purchased the old Porter school house and began tearing it down. The price was $100. He will use the brick to build an addition to his house.Sources:Chesterton Tribune, Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana; April 12, 1895; Volume 12, Number 1, Page 1, Column 6.
