ShookRemark: The Central House Hotel later became the Arthur E. Nickel Drug Store. The Club Cigar Store, a smoke shop and billiards parlor, is visible just past the Arthur E. Nickel Drug Store where the horse is tied up.----------The following newspaper item appears in the March 12, 1908, issue of The Chesterton Tribune:CLUB CIGAR STORE OPENED.Messrs. Guy and Claudy Make Their Bow to Chesterton Public. The Club cigar store No. 2, one of a series of institutions of a like nature established at Elwood, Gary and other Indiana cities, was opened in the Johnson store, near the corner of Main street and Calumet avenue, Saturday by Messrs. Guy and Claudy. The building had been thoroughly overhauled for Messrs. Guy and Claudy and now presents a most pleasing appearance. Besides handling a full line of imported and domestic cigars the new firm also has installed some fine new billiard and pool tables, which are proving a great attraction to enthusiasts of the green cloth game. Both Messrs' Guy and Claudy have great confidence in the future growth of Chesterton and feel that they have taken no chance by investing their money here.[Note: The Johnson Brothers vacated the building that became occupied by the cigar store and moved to a building located at the southeast corner of present day intersection of Broadway Avenue and South 3rd Street.]----------The following newspaper item appears in the July 11, 1912, issue of The Chesterton Tribune:FLAMES DAMAGE DRUG STOREFIRE THREATENS DESTRUCTION OF THE ENTIRE BLOCK.A Fire of Unknown Origin Occurs at 2 A. M. Last Saturday. – Good Work by the Fire Department.Fire of unknown origin threatened for a time Nickel’s drug store, the Club Cigar store, Bett’s jewelry store and the millinery shop early last Saturday morning. The fire was first discovered in the southwest corner of the upper floor of the drug store, and when seen had gained sufficient headway for the flames to break through the roof. An alarm was sounded and the firemen were quickly on hand. Fortunately the distance was so short that no team was necessary to haul the fire apparatus to the scene of the fire and several leads of hose were soon pouring a quenching flood of water upon the blaze. The flames had gained enough headway to make them difficult to fight. It had practically gutted the rear room of the upper floor and caught under the roof. The flames had alerady [sic] broken through the roof in a number of places and but for the prompt services of the firemen the entire building would have been destroyed and with it would have gone that entire block, as the weather had been so dry that everything was like tinder. The origin of the fire is unknown, but the most plausible theory is one of spontaneous combustion. A pile of rubbish had accumulated in the rear room where the fire started and it is probable that the hot afternoon sun pouring down upon the building and in the windows generated enough heat to start a fire which might have been smouldering [sic] for some time before it broke out into a blaze. No indications of a fire were apparent during the evening. The office of Drs. Wiltfong and Ruge on the second floor were open until nine o’clock and the drug store did not close until about ten and at that time there was nothing to indicate fire. The damage to the building was in the neighborhood of four or five hundred dollars, which was covered by insurance. The loss sustained by Druggist Nickels was not as great as appeared at first. Smoke and water wrought the greatest havoc, and the damaged was fixed at $150 by the insurance adjusters and after going over the stock carefully Mr. Nickels expressed himself as satisfied with this amount. Dr. Ruge, whose dental offices were located on the second floor and closet to the fire sustained the greatest loss, the most of the damage being done by the heat, smoke and water. The damage sustained by Dr. Wiltfong, whose office adjoined that of Dr. Ruge, amounts easily to $200.Before the flamed had died down, even before the firemen had gained control of the fire Dr. Ruge had rented new quarters and was notifying his patients that all appointments for the next day would be kept in the rooms formerly occupied by Dr. Hixon in the Johnson block, and when it came time to open his office Saturday morning he was ready for business in his new quarters.----------The following newspaper item appears in the August 8, 1912, issue of The Chesterton Tribune:Chesterton Items. So far the repairs on the building occupied by the Nickel drug store have been delayed pending the question of whether the town ordinance regarding the repair of buildings inside the fire limits will permit the repair of the structure. It is claimed that repairs exceeding in cost half the value of the building cannot be made without violating the ordinance, and that a new building will have to be constructed.Sources:The Chesterton Tribune, Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana; March 12, 1908; Volume 24, Number 50, Page 1, Column 3.
