説明 Kensington Gardens. Carlshurst. Carlshurst was built in 1883 in the Italianate style when cast iron lacework balconies and bay windows were fashionable. The German name for the house came from the owner Charles August Reinecke a land developer and accountant. It is an unusual house in that it has a main entrance on the north façade and an almost as grand entrance on the western facade. Charles Reinecke was born in Adelaide in 1851 and educated at St Peters Boys College. He joined a land agent, land brokering and accountancy firm in partnership with Walter Reynell not long after he entered the workforce. When Walter Reynell retired in 1885 Reinecke took over the running of that business. That was a busy time in his life. He married Charlotte Shuttleworth in 1883 and moved his bride into Carlshurst the year. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1884 and his first daughter was also born in that year. His only son was born in 1885 and his second daughter was born in 1889. In 1886 he was appointed by the SA government as an official liquidator. Reinecke ran his business offices from Ware Chambers in King William Street. He was a talented violinist and a long-time member of the Adelaide String Quartet until it disbanded in 1885. One of his prominent business roles was being the auditor of Broken Hill Proprietary mining company. Charles Reinecke died suddenly in 1918 leaving a wife and two daughters. His only son Lieutenant George Reinecke was killed in France during World War in 1916. Charles Reinecke’s father was George August Reinecke who purchased a property at William Street Norwood in 1866 which was where he died. George Reinecke lived from 1823 to 1899. Charles Reinecke’s wife died at Sandhurst in 1924.
