| 説明 | Milawa .Land was surveyed and sold here in 1857. 6,000 acres became available for small farmers and a small village was created at Milawa. Oxley was settled at the same time but named earlier by Hume and Hovell after the Surveyor General of NSW in the 1820s John Oxley. In 1857 John Graham planted vines but competition from other gape growing districts was great but the fledgling industry survived. John Graham left his vineyard to his daughter who had married George Brown. In turn their son John Brown joined the vineyard and produced his first wine in their old barn in 1889. His ancestors today own and run Brown Brothers Wines. Around 1900 grape Phylloxera infected the vines and destroyed all vineyards in the district (and Victoria). New Phylloxera resistant vines were planted in 1922 and the industry has bloomed ever since. There are now dozens of vineyards in the districts around Milawa with around 20 wineries. The historic buildings of the district are the former Oxley flourmill built in 1861 and now a ruin, the Oxley Shire Hall (shire created 1865) built in 1875 with a triple gable façade, the Oxley Protestant (and later Masonic Hall) built in 1888, the Milawa Anglican Church built around 1880 and the former Milawa Butter factory built around 1892 and now used by the Milawa Cheese Company. Milawa is the centre of the Milawa Gourmet Foods district. |
