説明For more than 13 years, Sandy and Geoff have volunteered their time to encourage responsible recreation on the BLM-managed public lands surrounding Moab, Utah. The area hosts 2.8 million recreation visitors each year, many of whom engage in non-motorized activities such as mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding. As the guiding force behind Trail Mix, the county’s non-motorized trail committee, the couple has revitalized the non-motorized segment of the county’s recreation and tourism economy. In 2008, BLM-Moab completed a resource management plan that limited mountain bikes to designated routes and designated up to 150 miles of new single-track mountain bike trails. Since the plan was established, user-created “pirate” trails continued to appear on BLM-managed lands. Trail Mix, led by the Freetheys, resolved to curtail the illegal mountain bike activity and to establish a new, plan-approved trail system. Sandy and Geoff mobilized volunteers to block the “pirate” trails and mobilized the mountain bike community to propose legitimate trail locations. The Trail Mix members ground-truthed the proposals, resolved potential resource issues, voted and then forwarded selected trail proposals to the BLM for review. The thorough preparation by the Freetheys, other volunteers and local government representatives enabled the BLM to conduct required planning and environmental assessments easily and quickly. Their spirit of collaboration also motivated the Moab mountain bike community to cooperate with the BLM. The new 150-mile trail system has revitalized the mountain bike economy in Moab. Sandy and Geoff retired from Trail Mix in January 2017 to devote 40 hours a week each to the BLM-Moab Recreation Program.
