説明With only WEEKS until Infinity War’s release, I’ve finally reached Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in my watchathon! The original film was such a surprise to audiences, expectations for this film were at an all-time high when it was released. The first time I watched Vol. 2, I thought it was a great MCU movie, but as time has gone by and the more and more I view it, it really grew on me as a perfect comicbook movie. I believe Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the most emotionally complex of the MCU films. There’s so much to unpackage in this film, but I found a great video essay that expresses pretty much all my sentiments on the film by Lindsay Ellis. I encourage all of you to check it out here to understand why I love this film so much: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VulkN5OLEM&index=1&list=... But my review isn’t just going to be a “ditto what she said,” so here are some things about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that makes it a BIG BOY of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Let’s check it out!Good: One of the biggest complaints that I see with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is that there’s too many jokes, which I believe is a pretty shallow complaint. Sure there are lots of jokes, and a huge amount of them are great, but I’ve read/heard complaints that all this movie is is just characters throwing jokes at the wall and not doing anything else. The reason why these jokes work for me is because they also work as great character building. There are childish jokes in the film like the Drax’s turds bit, but that’s to show that these characters start out in the beginning of the film as rather childish and cocky. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 happens two months after the first film, so this team are still trying to get along with each other, and they’re living off the high of saving the Galaxy, which is pretty relatable because I’ve been in situation when I’ve done something pretty dope that gains attention and I act like an ass, plain and simple. The jokes set up great arcs for both Peter and Rocket because they start out the film thinking they’re the shit after saving the universe in the first film, but throughout this film, they truly learn to live with themselves as heroes and with each other if that makes any sense. It still blows my mind that a major motion picture blockbuster ends with a shot of a raccoon crying because he realizes that he will be loved and missed at his own funeral. God damn, even typing that makes me a little teary-eyed, and that’s why I love the humor in the film, because it’s balances some pretty fucked up and emotional stuff. We see two sisters who were both victims of abuse come to terms with one another in this movie, we see a boy who been trying to find a family for his whole life finally find his real family, but realises that he’s had one this entire time. The way James Gunn executes the death of Yondu is absolute perfection, I would never see myself in a million years actually feeling for a death of a side character from the first film, but Gunn gives Yondu enough time for us to sympathise with him and why he’s so important to Peter and at the time when we sympathise with him the most, he dies, teaching Peter that he’s had a father this whole time. I always loved Star Lord in the comics and the first film, but his arc in this film really cemented Chris Pratt as Peter Quill probably my favorite character in the MCU, maybe tied with Chris Evan as Captain America. Another character that gets a lot of time to shine in this film is Dave Bautista as Drax. Now I’ve also heard the complaint that Drax gets barely any action sequences in this film and to be honest, I’m glad he doesn’t. Bautista and Gunn use what made Drax work so well in the first film in this movie, and that certainly wasn’t his action. The jokes with Drax are some of the best, but there’s also some pretty melancholy background to the character too. Drax in this film sees himself as a failed father and he builds a sort of father/daughter relationship with Mantis in this movie, especially in that scene where he compares her to his daughter and the ending where he calls her beautiful… on the inside of course which is classic Drax. Then there’s Groot. What can be said about baby Groot? He’s the most adorable thing ever and I will never not love him, and if you don’t love him either, I’m going to question your humanity. But baby Groot isn’t just a cute character to sell toys, he’s a big part in the overall theme of terrible parenting! Each Guardian has a time to act as a parent to Groot, and each interaction continues to build character. We start out with how they act with him while battling that beast, then end up at the end with Peteris listening to Father and Son with baby Groot, god that scene kills me every time. I also believe that Vol. 2 gives us one of the best villains of the MCU in Ego the Living Planet. Kurt Russell is THE man and he’s just such a bastard in this movie. He’s so full of himself and when he reveals that he put the brain tumor in Peter’s mother’s head, it’s just so satisfying to watch Peter blow him to pieces. I also think the Sovereign are pretty great in this film. I always say that they remind me of the neighbors from Christmas Vacation, they’re just some suck up elitists who always get fucked up and it’s a pleasure to watch. I also don’t believe these character arcs wouldn’t be half as good if it weren’t for the film’s soundtrack. Gunn has mastered using pop songs in movies because like the last film, each song in Vol. 2 has meaning to the film. The two times The Chain is played in this film I lose it, it’s my favorite song of all-time and it’s played at perfect times and it’s just ALL the feels. The score by Tyler Bates is also pretty decent, it’s a lot like the first film’s score, it’s not spectacular, but it works. Bad: Like I said, perfect film. Badda bing.Overall, if you felt mixed when you watched Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for the first time, I implore you to watch it again with the things I’ve said and that Lindsay Ellis video in mind. Trust me when I say this film gets better with multiple viewings. I can always rewatch this film because of its entertainment value and how much heart it has. I always laugh, I always cry, and that’s why it’s a perfect comicbook film. So yeah, 10/10. Let me know what you think of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in the comments below! I can’t believe I only have to watch two more films and then… INFINITY WAR!!!!
