| 説明 | CONSTABLE SINCLAIR W COWAN (CAITHNESS) died of wounds 100 years ago today while serving with the Scots Guards in France.God Bless him, and all who fell."They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morningWe will remember them."- "For the Fallen" by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)Sinclair Williamson Cowan, a native of Lochside, Castletown (Parish of Olrig) in Caithness, was born on 4th December 1893, son of William and Isabella Cowan, of Oust, Westfield, Thurso. He joined the Caithness-shire Constabulary as a Constable on 1st June 1914. and was posted to Wick. He continued to serve there until he "resigned on 26th June 1915 to join HM Army for the duration of the War".He was wounded in action while serving as a Guardsman in the 2nd Machine Gun Company, and died from his wounds on 30th March 1918. He was also awarded the Military Medal. He was 24 years of age.He lies, along with 8672 other casualties of the First and Second World Wars, in St. Sever Cemetery Extension at Rouen in Seine-Maritime, France.I am grateful to Highlands + Islands Division of Police Scotland for kindly providing the photograph of the memorial plaque to PC Cowan, which is located within the current Wick Police Station (having been transferred from the old Police Station when the new building opened), and to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for details of PC Cowan's grave.I am also grateful to PC Cowan's former police colleagues who made the effort to commemorate his sacrifice by contributing to fund the creation of his memorial plaque. The design on the plaque is that of the cap badge of Caithness-shire Constabulary as worn at the time of PC Cowan's service. There are 3 other memorials in the Highlands + Islands Police Division (former Northern Constabulary area) to officers who resigned from their force for the duration of the First World War, and who sadly never came back:DINGWALL - 3 Constables of Ross-shire Constabulary;INVERNESS - 2 Constables of Inverness Burgh Police;INVERNESS - one Constable of Inverness-shire ConstabularyThe photo of PC Cowan in military uniform appears in a book published soon after the war detailing Caithness combatants.NEVER FORGET"The Flowers of the Forest are a' wede away".(Research and text: Dave Conner) |
