説明 | photo by Gary Bridgman*Trapped, but not collected, by a local landowner. This is a case of pest eradication (small scale) and not hunting. The beaver presents the canoe-owning conservationist with a dilemma. They are part of the native ecosystem, but they seem to despise moving water, so they build dams (and I spelled it "damns" at first) everywhere they can. Landowners may disagree with the beaver's choice of which trees to cut down, or which patch of land needs to be converted into a beaver pond. The beaver population along the Wolf River used to be controlled by its predators, like wolves, black bears, and beaver pelt merchants. They are too big for any kind of raptor, and coyotes don't seem interested. We're too far north for alligators. The Ghost River section of the Wolf River (3 sections downstream of where this was taken) has such vast expanses of still water that the beaver don't seem particularly interested in blocking the channel. Also the streamflow is high enough there that a dam would have to be pretty big to work. * the photographer has granted the use of this image for the purpose of promoting water or greenspace conservation under a Creative Commons license whereby the photographer must be credited by name. |
