| 説明 | Wangaratta.Explorers Hume and Hovell passed through here in 1824 and named the area the Oxley Plains. They were followed by Major Thomas Mitchell in 1836. He is believed to have camped on the banks of the Ovens River near the end of the main street. Both were impressed with the country and pastures along the Ovens River. About a year later George and William Faithfull settled at the Bontharambo pastoral station, north of Wangaratta. In 1838 their leasehold was taken by Joseph Docker. Docker's went on to build Bontharambo homestead in 1858 and this grand residence is now on the Register of the National Estate but not accessible to the public. Thirteen years later the new state of Victoria was created out of this part of NSW. The administrative district of Port Phillip Bay was created in 1836 with Victoria being separated from NSW in 1851 at the start of the gold rush. Wangaratta emerged slowly as by 1840 all the surrounding land had been taken up by pastoral leaseholders. This was a crossing spot on the Ovens River and an enterprising colonist (Rattray) established a ferry service and a small inn here in 1838 and 1840 respectively. Wangaratta Post Office was one of the first inland postal office to start up in the Port Phillip District of NSW in 1843. In 1848 the Surveyor General for the Port Phillip District had a town surveyed at this spot with eleven streets and 200 town blocks but few were sold immediately. It was named Wangaratta by a surveyor named Wedge from an Aboriginal word meaning cormorants’ nesting place. The first land sales occurred in 1849 and by 1850 Wangaratta had several public buildings including a town school by the end of that year. The discovery of gold higher up the Ovens valley and near Beechworth in 1852 sped up the development of the town before 1860 as many failed diggers returned to Wangaratta to became settlers. The old punt service across the river was replaced with a wooden bridge in 1855, hotels flourished, general stores opened, industry began (blacksmithing etc.) and churches were erected. The only building left from this era is the Anglican Deanery built at the same time as the first Anglican Church in 1856. Everything else has been demolished and the City of Wangaratta has been busy demolishing its heritage buildings right up to the last few years. (e.g. The Royal Victoria Hotel demolished in 2006, the original council offices demolished in 2008, the oldest town store demolished in 2004, etc.) But a few more public buildings survive from the 1860s and 1870s but not many. One of the most important is the old railway station built in 1874 a year after the railway from Melbourne reached Wangaratta. Coaches then left from here for Beechworth, Bright, Rutherglen and other nearby towns. Another is the old Wangaratta brewery built in 1868 and the imposing St Patricks Catholic Church. It was designed by William Wardell the architect of the Catholic Cathedral in Melbourne and it was started in 1865. The nave and most of the church was completed by 1869. It was extended 1905 and enlarged in 1962. The London Chartered Bank was one of the first banks to open in Wangaratta I 1871. It built this grand banking chamber in 1875 at 49 Reid Street. It later became an E.S.& A. bank and then an ANZ bank before becoming offices. It is a classical building with a Doric porch and a small upstairs balcony. The other buildings from this period are the current public school in Chisholm Street built in 1876 when the 1850 National School was demolished, and the grand Post Office built in the 1873. Most of the current heritage building still standing date from the later in the 19th or early 20th centuries. •The wonderful Anglican cathedral which opened in 1909 still has its bell tower to be completed. Docker Street. Includes the Deanery and Bishop’s Lodge 1904 which is listed as 38 Ovens Street. •The old library built in 1909 which is now the Information Centre. Murphy Street.•The Pinset Hotel with perhaps a few walls from the 1850s but the main façade from the late 19th century. •The old Fire Station of 1895 which is now the Historical Society building. Ford Street. •The Presbyterian Church in Neo Romanesque style built in 1899. The Exhibitions gallery of the City. Ovens St.•Next door in Ovens St is Averleigh a two storey mansion built in 1887 for a local businessman. •Wangaratta Community Church. Docker Street. Probably was the Baptist Church built 1902. •The Methodist Church now the Uniting Church and the Church of Christ. Close to each other in Rowan St. The first wooden Wesleyan churchwas erected in 1870 and replaced with a brick structure around 1900. •The Art Deco style Courthouse is at 33 Faithful Street. Built in 1938 by Public Works Department architect Percy Everett who also did the Russell St Police headquarters in Melbourne and many other courthouses, police stations, schools etc in the Art Deco style. •Behind the Catholic Church is St Catherine’s Hostel (aged care facility) once the Catholic Convent. The chapel here built in 1929 is a beautiful masterpiece with fine stained glass windows, marble altar etc. It is available to residents and visitors. This is the Delaney Chapel is at 59 Ryley St. In the 20th century the town grew even more when large textile mills were established in it in 1923 and again later in 1946 when Bruck textiles mill were established. A third textile mill for Yakka clothing opened in the 1970s but alas all these mills are now gone except for the Dri Glo textile mill. As the population increased it was declared a city in 1959. This cathedral city with an Anglican Cathedral now has around 17,000 inhabitants. The diocese of Wangaratta was created in 1902. The city has three high schools and eight primary schools. |
