説明 | Introduced low-growing perennial C4 mat grass to 40 cm tall; stolons root and branch from the nodes. Leaves with sheath densely to sparsely pilose. Ligule a membrane to 1.5mm long. Sheaths are hairless (especially upper ones) to densely hairy. Blades are usually hairless and bluish green. Flowerheads are digitate with 2-3 (rarely 4) small, fine branches. Spikelets are rather crowded, paired and 2-2.75 mm long. Lower glume is minute. The upper glume is 60-75% as long as the spikelet. Lower sterile lemma is as long as the spikelet. Fertile lemma is smooth and yellowish to purple. A native of Madagascar, it was first introduced into Queensland and then brought into NSW; hence commonly known as Queensland Blue Couch. An indicator of low fertility sandy soils. It is allelopathic and highly invasive in full sunlight and under set stocking. Although of reasonable feed quality, it has low yields, the tops rapidly die during drought (often turning black) and are slow to recover with rain; hence Blue Couch areas are often heavily infested with Fireweed after summer drought. Largely replaces Narrowleaf Carpet Grass in the Hunter Valley; the latter is more abundant north of the Hunter. |
